The Grouse Lodge branch

William Fetherstonhaugh JP (1813 – 1877) was Cuthbert the Governor’s younger brother. William inherited Grouse Lodge from their father, Theobald, who was High Sheriff of Mosstown in 1805. William married his cousin Frances Fetherstonhaugh(1813-1884) in 1845 at Hacketstown Church in County Carlow, where Frances’s father the Rev. Cuthbert was the Rector. William was Lily’s uncle (from Lily’s lost album). William and Frances had eight children: Annie (1845-1926), Theobald (1846-1919), Mary (1849-1873) Edith (1850-1924), Charles (1852-1917), Arthur (1857-1895), Margaret (1857-1892) and Frances Theodora (1861-1884). Photos below of William and some of his children (Lily’s cousins) are sourced from Lily’s lost album.

William’s son Theobald (b1846) of Grouse Lodge was granted probate on his brother Arthur’s (b1857) death in 1895. Arthur was a solicitor.

William’s son Charles (1846 -1917) became a doctor. He served as Captain in the Turko-Russian war of 1877 as part of the Stafford House Committee for the Relief of Sick and Wounded Turkish Soldiers. He then immigrated to Williamstown, Melbourne’s first port settlement, where true to the Fetherstonhaugh’s love of horses, he was a member of the local racing committee. He married Ellen (Nellie) Cathrew (b1852), in St Mary’s Church, in North Melbourne in 1891. Charles practised medicine at Daylesford, where he was resident surgeon of the local hospital as well as at Corryong and North Melbourne. He was also one of the district’s medical examiners. In 1907 Charles retired due to ill health and was given a valedictory social that celebrated “his sterling worth and character”. On the 2nd January 1917, at his residence in Williamstown, Captain Charles Fetherstonhaugh, M.B., M.Ch. (Dublin), L.R.C.S.I. and L.M., the beloved husband of Ellen, and father of Lieutenant Cuthbert Foster, died suddenly aged 63 years. His death notice requested no flowers.

William’s daughter Margaret (Meg) was born at Grouse Lodge like all her siblings, but immigrated at some time to New Zealand (where Lily’s photo album was found), and died there at Nelson 1892. Probate was granted to brother Arthur at Rockfield (as was her sister Anne’s)

William’s son Theobald (Toby, 1846 – 1919) inherited Grouse Lodge from his father and married Kate Olivia Bond (1864 – 1949). Toby (below) and Kate had three children: William Ernest (b1888), Theodora and Lewis (1894). William Ernest served on the ship the ‘Manella’ from London to Calcutta and married in Bengal. He died at sea aged 35 in 1959. Lewis (b1894) married Edna Drewry and served in the military 1914-1920. He died in South Africa in 1968.

  1. Hello there. Just a correction to your information about
    Dr Charles Fetherstonhaugh.

This is the published death notice sourced from TROVE

A published obituary states that Charles served in the Turko-Russian war of 1877 as part of the Stafford House Committee for the Relief of Sick and Wounded Turkish Soldiers.

One of my Cumbrian Fletchers married into the Fetherstonhaugh family in the 16th century.

Thank you for developing such an interesting website.

    Best wishes.
